Meet Karima, after fleeing Afghanistan over 20 years ago she returned in 2011 hoping for a new start, where she would face less discrimination, and her family could prosper. In 2020 she decided to move to Herat as a now single woman with hope of employment and a safe and welcoming community environment. 

For the last 4 years Karima now 55 has been working with Afghan Red Gold Saffron company where she las learnt all about saffron and working with high quality produce. Karima a former teacher really values the community spirit that she has found working in the fields and processing venues, she is also proud to be working in an environment that promotes safe working, actively looks to protect workers rights, and build an inclusive workforce.

Working in saffron has enabled her to not only meet her immediate financial needs but also to start saving. She has the ambition to one day be an employer herself and start her own business where she can help empower other women to learn new skills and seek a brighter future in Herat and beyond.
